HAITIAN DIASPORA

Haitian Diaspora
The Haitian Diaspora is not a footnote to history, it is a force shaping the present and the future.
Across cities, generations, and borders, Haitian voices continue to create, build, resist, and re-imagine belonging. Yet many of these stories remain fragmented, misunderstood, or unheard beyond the communities that carry them.
DiasporaMart is developing a documentary project dedicated to the Haitian Diaspora, not as a nostalgic look backward, but as a living, evolving narrative of identity, resilience, and contribution.
Perspective
Project Perspective & Approach
This documentary is conceived as a thoughtful, character-driven exploration of diaspora life in the U.S., grounded in authenticity and ethical storytelling.
Rather than offering a single storyline or prescriptive message, the project focuses on shared themes relevant to American society today:
-
belonging and identity across generations,
-
the transmission of memory within immigrant families,
-
and the role of diaspora communities in shaping local and national spaces.
The approach prioritizes listening, trust-building, and collaboration, allowing participants to engage on their own terms while preserving narrative integrity and creative discretion.

Film as a Future: Creativity,
Culture and Community Empowerment
Cinema & Film Education
A Core Initiative of Diasporamart Foundation Inc.
A Program Designed for Cultural Empowerment, Youth Development, and Community Impact
At Diasporamart Foundation, we view cinema as a transformative educational tool that strengthens cultural identity, fosters critical thinking, and empowers the next generation of leaders within the Haitian-American diaspora.
Our film education initiative is built around a clear mission:
To provide young people with access to training, mentorship, creative opportunities, and hands-on experiences in the arts and media.
Through workshops, screenings, documentary projects, community dialogues, and collaborative productions, we aim to:
-
Teach visual literacy and storytelling skills
-
Introduce youth to careers in film, media, and digital arts
-
Encourage self-expression and leadership through creative practice
-
Preserve and share cultural narratives of the diaspora
-
Build intergenerational bridges through artistic collaboration
This initiative is grounded in more than twenty years of cultural engagement, including the publication of over 65 books and the production of two feature films (Destiny of a Child, 2019; Angelica, 2023). Our experience demonstrates that film is one of the most effective ways to inspire dialogue, strengthen communities, and amplify underrepresented voices.
With strategic support from grantmakers and community partners, Diasporamart seeks to expand its programs by offering:
-
Film and media education workshops for youth
-
Mentorship and career guidance in the arts
-
Community film screenings and cultural discussions
-
Production opportunities for emerging filmmakers
-
Collaborative documentary projects highlighting community stories
By investing in film education, you help create pathways to artistic careers, civic engagement, and cultural empowerment.
Together, we can build a vibrant, creative ecosystem where our youth learn, thrive, and lead through the power of cinema.
